Efficient and clean operation for sustainable production

Environmental protection is the core of Daimler’s corporate sustainability practice. Our Oragadam plant is an exemplary to the cause. We pursue an integrated approach to environmental protection, examine the causes of possible environmental effects, and take proactive measures to minimize negative effects from our activities with the help of effective environmental management systems and state-of-the-art technologies.

The Oragadam plant is spread over 400 acres of land which is roughly the size of 6400 tennis courts. Sixty percent of this area is sealed by buildings, stockyards and roads. As a limited public resource, our floor space is used as efficiently as possible, for example by building densely with several floors. At the same time, we have consciously decided on keeping 40 acres as a green belt with over 16,000 trees and growing. Additionally a network of drainage holds over 65000 kilo litres of run-off water in a 27,000 sq. m harvesting pond. This pond is used to charge ground water and irrigate in-house landscaping projects and has been designed to serve as a habitat for both indigenous as well as migratory flora and fauna. In this way, the company facilitates biodiversity even amidst the industrial architecture.

A large number of measures aimed at aligning the company's premises as sustainable as possible have already been implemented. With three solar powered Photo Voltaic (PV) plants generating up to 3.3 kV of power that meets nearly 1/3rd of the production facility’s energy requirement during the day.

Our third and most extensive approach is the conservation of water & effluent treatment. With dedicated water and sewage treatment plants, we ensure zero wastage of water and reutilize sewage post treatment for watering, flushing and in compost pits.

In addition, there are in-house standards for the handling & safe disposal of hazardous materials, waste management, and soil and groundwater contamination.

To eliminate or curb environmental risks in advance, we regularly audit our facilities in accordance with globally uniform standards. Suppliers must meet our sustainability requirements, and we expect them to have a certified environmental management system in accordance with ISO14001, EMAS or other comparable standards.
